I was debating whether to get the 2TB SSD or stay with the 1TB for my upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max. After all, ProRes files are huge and will use up 1 TB of storage with a few hours of 4K recording! Also upgrading to the 2TB costs $400 for 1 extra TB.
After doing some research, I'm sticking with the 1TB because it seems you can only record ProRes RAW to an external SSD, not to internal iPhone storage! No need for a $400 1TB Apple upgrade to 2TB!
Doing a web search produces this:
"To record ProRes RAW, you must connect an external SSD drive to the iPhone via the USB-C port. A fast, exFAT-formatted drive is required to handle the extremely high data rate of the RAW footage. Recording directly to the iPhone's internal storage is not supported for ProRes RAW due to the immense file sizes."
My 2TB Lexar SSD will do just fine for recording ProRes RAW. And it is less than $200 for 2TB versus Apple's $400 for 1 extra TB.
In any event, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on my Deep Blue 1TB iPhone 17 Pro Max Friday September 19th and seeing what all the ProRes RAW fuss is about. Stay tuned and Subscribe to my YouTube channel to follow along:
I went looking for confirmation that the iPhone 17 Pro only records ProRes RAW to external SSDs and not to its internal storage. I got it from a video made by Tyler Stalman who was at the Apple Event and got some hands on with the new iPhone 17 Pro. He saw this pop-up on the iPhone screen when he tried to record ProRes RAW:
It's curious why Apple doesn't mention this anywhere online or in their videos. A lot of people are going to be, at the very least, disappointed that they can't record ProRes RAW on their brand new iPhone 17 Pro's internal storage.
Might this change with an update? That could happen, but for now it seems you will need a fast SSD formatted in exFAT to record ProRes RAW with your brand new expensive iPhone 17 Pro. This might be because the open gate files contain more data and therfore are larger than regular 16x9 ProRes files.
